Young people, creatives, raw space, high energy, espresso machines, bean bags, Ted talks. Usually what comes to mind when thinking about working at a start up. Much of it is true, but it’s only a sliver of the overall picture. The energy of young, vibrant, creative minds is unlike anything else, but the frenetic pacing and at times zig-zagging chain of command can overwhelm those coming from a traditional job at a big, highly structured company.
Picture yourself on a Saturday night. You’re out with friends, the music and voices of friends floating around you. You’re enjoying yourself. And then your phone lights up with a crisis and will not. stop. buzzing. The emails are pouring in. You step outside. Your friend pokes his head outside and sees you standing at the curb, brow furrowed, working through the issue over the phone. But when you hang up, the problem is solved. It feels good. You’re a hustler. This is start up life. Does this sound like you?
